The owners of Eastern European Delicacy, the only such market in the area, opened Maxim in a space long occupied by a Mexican restaurant, vestiges of which remain in the bucolic wall murals. Fortunately, the striking borscht and the satisfying pelmeni transcend the mildly surreal surroundings. While Eastern Europe sets the tone here, the menu broadens in places to include hummus, oysters Rockefeller, New Orleans-style stuffed shrimp, and Americanized brunch dishes. Maxim joins numerous other ethnic restaurants and markets out in this diverse area of the suburbs. A food adventurer could spend an entire afternoon in the neighborhood.
