THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Max's Opera Cafe Restaurant Review:
At best, this branch of the Maxs chain offers honest, hearty, Yiddeshe-mama-type fare. At worst, the food can be heavy and rather greasy---not to mention overpriced. Portions are often gigantic---a chopped chicken liver appetizer can easily extend to two meals for a light eater. Fans of traditional New York deli will enjoy the corned beef sandwich and the pastrami on rye. Dinner specialties, such as the stuffed cabbage and the beef brisket with potato latkes, are so authentically Old Country, you expect a Jewish grandmother to materialize out of nowhere, shouting Eat! Youre too skinny! Instead, there are the singing servers who, in our opinion, do not vastly improve the dining experience, though they do add to the novelty factor. The main things this restaurant has going for it are the outrageously decadent desserts and the hype factor. Its an institution, like it or not.
