74th Street Alehouse Restaurant Review:

The most extraordinary thing about the Alehouse is just how un-extraordinary it is: lived-in and casual, with options for everyone. The menu ranges from organic baguettes spread with herb butter to blackened salmon sandwiches. Salads are as traditional as mixed greens, and as unusual as warm goat cheese topped with house-made herb croutons. The classic 74th Street gumbo brimming with andouille sausage, shrimp and chunks of roasted chicken is a favorite. Weekly specials rotate on Fridays and may include oyster po’ boys or meatloaf and mashed potatoes paired with a Guinness gravy. The wine list, while middle-tier, pairs well with the often spicy dishes. On weekends, the alehouse can become as crowded as its sibling neighborhood stomping grounds, Hilltop Alehouse and Columbia City Alehouse. But here the music stays low and the service is friendly, if at times overwhelmed. Prices are higher than the average for pub food, but the welcome exchange is quality. Note that it’s 21-and-over at all times.
