Biwa Restaurant Review:
Biwa is slick and crowded, offering small plates featuring all sorts of creative Japanese fare. Homemade ramen is deservedly well known. You'll also find sashimi and handmade pork dumplings, fried and pickled mackerel salad, deep-fried kimchi, ramen bowls with smoked pork shoulder, and miso-butterscotch gelato. Meals typically begin with a plate of complimentary popcorn. The late-night bar menu features unusual bites such as a burger paired with house-prepared kimchi mayo; goat curry rice with eggs, pickles and shiso; and fried rice with ground duck. Beverages include a wide selection of saké, shochu (a traditional spirit from southern Japan) and intriguing homemade sodas --- think sour plum and black pepper. The five percent "Health and Wellness" charge on the bill may surprise patrons.
