Doing a brisk business for years, Caffe Nonna serves pasta and other Italian comfort dishes in a relaxed, intimate ambience. The magic behind the menu was born in the well-worn recipe box of chef Daniel Maggipinto's grandmother; grandmother is Nonna in Italian, so she’s also the namesake of this beloved neighborhood haunt. If you can't decide between the veal roulade stuffed with ricotta, pancetta and basil and the house lasagna with a surprise layer of butternut squash, compose one of your own invention from the list of pastas, sauces and toppings, such as fettucine with sun-dried tomatoes and shrimp. The basilica sauce of tomatoes and tender onions in white wine is a standout, as is the spicy arrabbiata. Artisan pizzas include a classic margherita as well as a make-your-own option. For dessert, the house-made gelato is usually your best bet. The affordable wine list lines up both Italian and Californian selections, with many available by the glass. As it's a small, rustic space, reservations are a good idea.
