Casa Colombia Restaurant Review:

Casa Colombia in Austin’s East Side offers passport-trotting flavors. Chances are you won’t be familiar with many of the dishes on the menu --- pabellón (Venezuelan shredded beef mixed with criolla sauce over rice) or tamal valluno (corn masa stuffed with pork, beef, chicken and vegetables wrapped in plantains). But like the swallows of Capistrano, once you’ve found such a good thing, you’re going to keep coming back. Pescado en cilantro y mayonesa highlights how unique simplicity can transform your notion of a basic fish like tilapia. Ditto for skirt steak, featured in the house specialty (request it with the tart house chimichurri) that comes with chicharrón (bearing little resemblance to Mexican chicharrón) with a fried egg. Enjoy appetizers of empanadas, arepas or aborrajado. Bar options are primarily beer and wine, along with a few fruit-flavored, frozen sangrías. Note: Casa Colombia was formerly located at 1614 E. 7th St., Austin.
