Demera Ethiopian Restaurant Restaurant Review:

Diners eager to try something exotic or who find too much silverware confusing will feel at home at Demera. Specializing in traditional Ethiopian cuisine, this cozy, vegetarian-friendly Uptown restaurant serves up a variety of stews heady with fragrant spices. But forget about using a fork or spoon; instead, injera --- large, soft flatbread made out of fermented teff flour --- is used to scoop up the flavorful dishes. Messy? A little bit. But is it fun? You bet. Start off with crispy turnovers filled with beef, spinach, lentils or minced chicken. Beyond that, doro wat, a traditional dish of tender chicken drumsticks marinated in lemon and stewed in berbere sauce, is a good introduction to the flavors of Ethiopian cuisine. Combination platters, which include vegetable sides such as gomen (collard greens) and tikil gomen (cabbage and carrots), are a good bet as well. Then again, the sambussa (fried dumplings) are hard to deny. The menu features some 50 items, including lamb, beef, seafood, poultry and vegetable dishes. To drink: sip on Ethiopian coffee (roasted in-house) or tea.
