Fat Apples Restaurant & Bakery Restaurant Review:
Despite its prime location near Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto, this decades-old spot with the cute name is a down-to-earth diner and bakery. (Another Fat Apple's thrives in El Cerrito.) The no-frills dining room décor includes light wood tables and a large mural tribute to Jack London; next door, a functional bakery counter greets a daily stream of hungry young people from the nearby middle school. Made daily and seasonally, a wide array of pies includes the house special olallieberry. Breakfasts are also available; basics such as pancakes (try the pumpkin version) and french toast prevail. Overall prices can be a little steep for the product. Mainly people come here for the pretense-free welcome, American staples and family-friendly atmosphere.
