About the restaurant: This branch of the Il Fornaio chain is a sprawling trattoria with sleek good looks owing to a long bar, generous blond wood accents and a terrace overlooking the plaza of One Colorado, an Old Pasadena shopping-entertainment complex. A versatile place, Il Fornaio offers options from enjoying a steaming latte with a newspaper at the espresso bar to indulging in a full-blown meal.

Food & Drinks: Based on our experience, however, we recommend sticking with the basics. Items like squash-stuffed ravioli in brown butter sauce, tagliatelle bolognese, and the margherita pizza are reliable bets. Rotating regional menus---each featuring a different region of Italy---sometimes provide enticing dishes (and wines) not widely available in L.A.
