Fried green tomatoes are not to be missed, but there’s much more at Irondale Cafe.

Irondale Cafe Restaurant Review:

The sprawling interior of this classic “meat-and-three” cafe is much larger than the one depicted in the film based on Fannie Flag’s book “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café,” but the setting across from the railroad tracks won’t disappoint visitors who saw the film. The author's great-aunt, Bess Fortenberry, owned the original restaurant, past which trains still rumble. Every day, servers dish out approximately 600-800 slices of fried green tomatoes. We like them dipped in the spicy rémoulade sauce. Other Southern specialties line the steam table, such as fried chicken, meatloaf, chicken and dumplings, and fruit cobblers. Windy Hill Farm fried catfish and Bon Secour shrimp Creole make spot appearances. Jim Dolan, who has owned the café since 2000, adds his own creative touches, such as a zesty house-made pepper sauce for the turnip greens. Desserts include such Southern staples as homemade coconut cake, chocolate chess pie and banana pudding. Iced tea and soft drinks are the quaffs of choice, along with local Good People craft beer.
