The upscale sibling of Papa Haydn next door, Jo Bar offers a more sophisticated menu inspired by the wood-fired oven dominating the kitchen. On warm days, it's fun to sit outside on the Avenue, but on inclement days, indoor seating is appealingly cozy. Comfortable chairs, a shiny central bar, and a wide marble counter set the stage. Big windows allow watching the parade of people walking by on 23rd Avenue. The menu spans a variety of cuisines with something to please everyone. Anything from the aforementioned wood-fired oven, from fish to steak and baked pastas, is usually good. Risottos are always a tasty choice, most notably the lobster risotto with a seared scallop on top. Salads are another option; try the bay shrimp cake with mixed greens, avocado and citrus segments, or the steak salad with butter lettuce and brioche croutons. Or opt for pad thai ravioli, pizza or a burger. Sunday brunch selections include a duck confit frittata and a smoked salmon crêpe. Desserts range from a warm chocolate cake to fruit cobbler and bread pudding, but you may want to order directly from Papa Haydn's dessert menu. The bartenders concoct some of the best cocktails in town, and service is friendly and competent.
