La Scala Restaurant Review:

In the ’50s and ’60s, Jean Leon’s La Scala was the first choice for Italian fine dining in Beverly Hills, and La Scala Boutique was ultimately opened as its casual cousin next door. Today, the personality of the old La Scala Boutique is captured at the current location of this popular restaurant. The La Scala mystique --- outlasting now-defunct Hollywood hotspots Scandia or Chasen’s --- has been enthusiastically adopted by new generations of diners. The chopped salad (with its marinated garbanzo beans) is legendary, and old-school appetizers like prosciutto and melon and minestrone precede reliable entrées such as whitefish in a garlic-wine sauce and veal Marsala. Pastas include spaghetti alla bolognese, a staple at La Scala since 1956, and lobster ravioli. Some classic vegetable dishes include a pumpkin ravioli, linguine puttanesca and baked eggplant Parmigiana. Lunch offers all the traditional pastas, as well as the La Scala steak panino of sliced marinated beef with mushrooms and melted mozzarella. Cheesecake or tiramisu are the best ways to finish, and the wine list is notable. This historic eatery, with its red leather banquettes and crisp white linen, remains a nostalgic footnote to a more glamorous Beverly Hills.
