Malai Marke Restaurant Review:

Set in the middle of E. 6th Street between First and Second Avenues, Malai Marke doesn’t try to lure you in with a miasma of flashing lights or a restaurant barker, or even a window-side sitar player. In fact, the lack of all these gimmicks, plus a chic interior design, may be the best advertisement to beckon the hungry diner. The menu is fairly straightforward, but some of the most memorable dishes come from the sea. The southern Indian konju pappas, shrimp cooked in tomatoes and coconut milk, and the spicy fish ambotik, from Goa, are standouts. But there are some turf delights as well: the peppercorn-laced lamb (aka lamb pepper fry) and the impossible to pronounce chicken xacuti, doused in roasted coconut and peanuts, will satiate any subcontinental hunger. To wash it all down, there are a large handful of beers by the bottle and a few on tap and a short, moderately priced wine list.
