Mardi is situated in the inviting indoor-outdoor courtyard in the center of the Palihouse West Hollywood hotel. It’s pretty, romantic, intimate and a fine place to linger, with one of the city’s better craft cocktail lists. Don’t expect fancy drink names, but do anticipate sophisticated and nuanced concoctions, with ingredients like a rhubarb shrub, jalapeño-infused green chartreuse, red pepper or kumquat. Try the warm bread with velvety smoked olive butter. A California-focused menu offers interesting small plates, and bigger platters that are good for sharing. Some dishes don’t completely entirely work, like a bland rabbit ragoût. However, others are quite remarkable, especially the enormous fried maitake mushroom with bagna cauda and lemon, as sculptural as modern art, lightly crispy on the outside and moist and flavorful inside. An outstanding roast chicken comes as a platter (half or whole) nestled amidst a meadowy medley of morels, fresh peas and chicories. For dessert, you might encounter chocolate torte or apple hand pie.
