If the Verizon Center can boast of something besides sports events, it would be its ability to attract interesting eateries to a once-seedy part of town. And in the collection of restaurants is matchbox american kitchen + spirits, noted for its diminutive size, funky attitude, and wood-grilled pizzas. That it sits next door to a Chinese eatery, a sandwich shop, and a barbecue joint only adds to its character. Indeed, what matchbox offers is a classic thin-crusted pie with both traditional and contemporary topping selections. Choices include the chicken pesto and the “fire & smoke” pies, the latter with red peppers, chipotle chiles and smoked Gouda; and also a rather basic Italian sausage, garlic, tomato sauce and mozzarella pie. Start with the house chopped salad with bits of bacon, pasta and diced tomatoes. The menu also offers a handful of sandwiches, such as the bistro burger with melted Gorgonzola, and a small number of entrées --- think chicken farfalle (spicy pecan-crusted chicken breast) and grilled sirloin. For dessert there’s chocolate chip bread pudding and three ice creams.
