Merchant's Restaurant Restaurant Review:

Once housing a hotel, a pharmacy and other enterprises, the building Merchant’s has occupied for more than 25 years dates to 1892. Original tiles and marble counters are among the historic elements retained, and windows look out over the hubbub of downtown. Two styles of dining are available: downstairs hosts a casual bistro-style atmosphere over black-and-white checked floors and anchored by a circular bar; the tone upstairs is substantially more elegant. The former setting’s menu offers salads, starters like duck fat tater tots, sandwiches and entrées covering the American South and France with chicken fried chicken and steak frites. Upstairs, choose from steaks with à la carte sides including truffled gnocchi mac ‘n’ cheese, and entrées of smoked pork chop with apple purée and Brussels sprouts. Desserts have included bread pudding made with Goo Goo Clusters, a locally beloved chocolate peanut confection. Some two dozen wines are offered by the glass, and classic cocktails are a great match for the timeless décor.
