Downtown diners craving comfort food with a sophisticated spin need only head over to the Mission to find it. Combining celadon tones with cranberry accents and featuring big, comfy booths, the dining room tempts the thousands hurrying through the always-busy IDS to slow down and stop in for a bite. But don’t for a minute think you’re getting chicken-fried steak. Mission takes the familiar and lifts it up, giving each straightforward dish a renovation. Simple homemade potato chips are light and crispy, perfectly salted and addictive with seasoned sour cream. Lunch-goers are treated to Kobe corned beef Reubens with house-braised sauerkraut or a fried egg and prosciutto sandwich with smoked paprika fries, while the dinner crowd chooses from house-smoked rib-eye with sweet peas and pearl onions in hazelnut oil or homespun, roasted chicken kicked up with bacon-potato hash and fragrant rosemary-orange sauce. Desserts are fine: a box of local chocolatier B.T. McElrath’s chocolates or a slice of old-fashioned red velvet cake. The wine list has nice representation and is broken down into approachable categories such as Big, Soft, Smooth, Juicy and Fresh.
