Monterey Palace Restaurant Restaurant Review:
It is no easy task for a Chinese restaurant to distinguish itself in Monterey Park, given that this suburban community rivals Chinatown as the center of Chinese culture in L.A. and boasts an even greater concentration of dining opportunities, from tiny noodle houses to massive dim sum palaces. This popular establishment has succeeded in separating itself from the crowd, thanks to an abundance of fresh seafood and some hard-to-find renditions of fowl and pork. The walls of the sprawling dining room are covered with mural-like photos of Hong Kong and Kowloon Harbor. Amid these dramatic skyline panoramas, a sea of tables dressed in crisp white linen are attended to by waiters in colorful tuxedo vests. All the classic Cantonese dishes---shark's fin soup, Peking duck, braised squab and stir-fried clams in black-bean sauce---are ably prepared here, as are familiar Szechuan specialties like kung pao shrimp and tangerine beef. In addition to the full-service dining room, a take-out counter offers duck, barbecued ribs, chicken livers, tripe and other delicacies.
