Mother has elevated vegetarian food to a level previously unseen in Sacramento. Once relegated only to a few Asian eateries and natural food store delis, meatless cuisine had not, until now, taken hold in a city dominated by meat eaters. But one meal at Mother can convert even the most devout carnivore. The place is unique in both concept and design: it is rustic yet sleek, down-to-Earth yet refined. Chalkboard walls provide a canvas for bright artwork, the “graffiti” creating an urban vibe, while a polished blond wood floor and tables bring the outdoors in. Inspired mostly by Southern cooking, dishes are lovingly crafted using the freshest in-season ingredients. Starters include chicken-fried mushrooms, the umami nicely offset by a mild house-made rémoulade. Entrées include a fingerling potato poutine, the portobello gravy peppered with sweet green peas, and a richly satisfying carrot-nut burger, jazzed up with harissa ketchup and a tangy house-cured pickle. Salads are always a hit, especially the seasonal kale, which may include grilled peaches and burrata or apple and walnuts. Several desserts are also available, such as the brown butter sea salt cookies.
