Ootoya Restaurant Review:

Pronounced “oh-oh-toy-ya,” Ootoya refreshingly transcends the sushi and ramen hegemony that has a stronghold on Americans’ knowledge of Japanese cuisine. It’s actually a small chain of restaurants in Japan, though this New York outpost is much less casual that its counterparts in that country. There’s plenty on the menu that appeals, and for the diner who is not familiar with the diversity of Japanese cooking, many new dishes to enjoy: thinly sliced grilled Wagyu beef; sushi bowls of rice, vegetables, bluefin tuna and salmon, often with a poached egg on top creating another layer of flavor; homemade tofu, soft and silky. For dessert, it’s hard to beat the wasabi mochi. A long list of saké is available as are some surprisingly affordable wine selections.
