Papouli's Greek Grill Restaurant Review:

Papouli's is operated by a long-established San Antonio restaurant family, and it celebrates that heritage in both name (papouli means "grandfather" in Greek) and cuisine. Dependable is a word that comes to mind when contemplating the family’s Greek fare. But if little soars to Olympian status, classic appetizers such as the puff pastry tyropita are well-executed, as are the obligatory dolmas. Traditional dishes tweaked for the local market include a jalapeño-laced hummus, and roasted red pepper and roasted garlic versions are also available. Sadly, the moussaka is unmemorable, but the Greek salads are generous and lively and seriously sprinkled with salty feta. Gypsy lentil and Tuscan tomato soups are other reliable choices. Come to think of it, the grilled souvlakis of lamb, beef and chicken are actually laurel-worthy. We also appreciate the Moroccan couscous with pine nuts and dried cranberries. But the crowning achievement may be the galaktoboureko. This dessert with a tongue-twisting moniker is a rich egg custard topped by flaky phyllo suffused with honey syrup and cinnamon. Think comfort food for the gods. Other locations.
