Parkway Bakery & Tavern Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant: Dating to 1911, Parkway Bakery & Tavern was shuttered for a long while, then restored by local denizen Jay Nix. The simple, rustic building and the cooking are pure New Orleans, and the atmosphere is casual: stand in line to order and then pick up your food when they call your name. Seating is offered inside in the no-frills building, or outside under a covered structure.

Food & Drinks: The house signature dish has to be the hot roast beef po’ boy, fully dressed with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mayo. Other tempting selections include catfish, shrimp, oysters and barbecue beef. The huge hot dog is as juicy as any, and since you’ve come this far south, have some sweet potato fries. House-made desserts are classics of the Southern canon: bread pudding with rum sauce, banana pudding and rum cake. Meanwhile, the bar serves up local beers, specialty cocktails and a short list of wines. The local memorabilia and photos on the wall tell the story of New Orleans.
