Perch, Los Angeles, CA

Perch Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant: With bird's-eye views for miles, rooftop bistro Perch is all about atmosphere. Sunset transforms downtown LA’s mundane office buildings into sparkling towers, and the day's cares fade into the twilight. To reach this perch, you'll board an elevator in the vaulted lobby of the circa-1924 Pershing Square Building, then move to a different elevator bank on the 13th floor to access the 15th floor. Couples flirt, and conversation buzzes throughout the long marble bar and cozy indoor lounge tables. But the place's real raison d'être is the sprawling patio, where one is literally perched over the noir-ish cityscape that hums below. Greenery lends some lushness, and fireplaces add warmth and romance. A rooftop party space can be found another level above.

Food & Drinks: Handcrafted cocktails feature gin with cucumber and jalapeño, or rye with lemon and basil; there's also draft Belgian beer and an affordable wine list. The food isn't haute cuisine --- but, fortunately, it doesn’t pretend to be either. Casual French bistro classics include mussels in saffron broth, French onion soup and savory truffle fries. Steak frites and bouillabaisse are adequately satisfying. Sweet endings might include white chocolate bread pudding, chocolate pot de crème and orange cardamom crème brûlée. Come for the drinks, for the scene, for weekend brunch, for night and the city.
