Perro Salado Restaurant Review:
Perro Salado provides a warm welcome from the moment you walk through the doors and into its series of small dining rooms---in reality, the former parlor and bedrooms of this old Colonial home. The close quarters, plus the presence of two bars, enhance the convivial atmosphere of what has become a popular gathering place for Newport locals, especially in the winter off-season. (During the summer, dining options expand to include a small, shady patio hung with festive lights.) A pitcher of blood-orange margaritas is a good way to start your meal, and the nacho chips come with a smoky salsa with just a bit of kick. The sticky pork ribs are an absolute must as an appetizer, sweet meat just sliding off the bone. Entrées include well-executed standbys like tacos and enchiladas but also more authentic treats like Yucatan pork (braised in a banana leaf) and the playful panko-breaded Tijuana chicken, served with a jalapeño gravy. The restaurant is often busy, and sometimes the staff struggles to keep up with the crowds, but go with the flow and order another round of drinks---the food is worth the wait.
