Red Tomato Pizza House Restaurant Review:

Berkeley has nearly as many pizza joints as it has professors, but Red Tomato rises in golden glory from the yeasty ranks for its diversity of choices and options for diners with special dietary needs. Along with regular pizzas, also available are vegan and tapioca-based gluten-free pizzas with soy-free and vegan "cheese." For special diets and omnivorous diners alike, Red Tomato is a happy blast from the past in that it offers more than just thin-crusted pies: the eatery's thick "original" crust is a resplendently chewy reminder of the carefree pre-carbophobic era. Try it as is or "stuffed": injected with melty cheese. Fluffy, towering, almost cake-like Sicilian-style "pan" pizzas are satisfying just to look at, but do more than look. Other toppings include meats, cheeses, fresh vegetables and --- for the truly adventurous --- creamy ranch dressing instead of marinara. Sides, salads, sandwiches and beer accompany the pies. The setting is humble --- a former Round Table space --- but with a warm neighborly feel.
