ReSette Restaurant Review:

Part "Merchant of Venice" set, part sultry New York lounge, ReSette is both warm (literally-there's a wood-burning oven) and cool. You'll be greeted by a long mahogany bar that features an extensive selection of grappa, then move to the moody dining of jewel-toned tapestry-covered chairs, low-lit candelabras and deep Naugahyde banquettes against brick-red textured walls. Kind of feel like you're in an early Renaissance palazzo? Well ReSette means "seven kings," and you can feast royally on hearty, rustic food with just enough flair to keep things interesting. It's one of those rare menus on which everything sounds good, and most dishes deliver. You'll wish the grilled risotto cake topped with veal ragu came in an entrée size, and the calamari in a stewy mix of olives, roasted tomatoes, chardonnay, garlic and oil will make you feel like you're in a Sicilian fishing village. Some of the best things come out of that roaring oven: The thin-crusted pizza del re (topped with a sweet-and-salty combination of prosciutto, fig jam, caramelized pearl onions and gorgonzola), and moist guinea hen glazed with lemon, lime and orange juices. Chef Alessandro Sachetti's pappardelle Domenico (or Sunday sauce), pinched from his grandmother's repertoire, is a hit: a thick pork-and-beef ragu atop tender house made noodles. If you're having a party, consider reserving the 28-foot "King's Table" that seats up to 32 guests in the upstairs dining room. And if you're lucky, you may get the handsome young waiter who's a trained opera singer to belt out a Donizetti aria for you. ReSette is the first foray into restaurants for owner Yagur Sheinman, who's involved in the diamond industry. Like a good ruler, he knows how to pick the right people to make his court a success.
