Sitting on the banks of the May River, the elegant, formal River House is the resort's main dining room, although other more casual venues dot the 20,000-acre facility. Here, one may begin the day with a Southern-style breakfast, complete with stone-ground grits, buttermilk biscuits and a crab cake Benedict. At lunch, taste a classic she-crab bisque or a selection of chilled coastal shellfish (May River oysters are a special treat if available). For dinner, Southern regional touches continue in the Carolina Gold risotto with foraged local mushrooms and the Virginia Berkshire pork chop paired with a smoked cheddar mac 'n' cheese and winter greens. South Carolina-sourced organic food products are featured on the menu. Roasted pear and blackberry crisp with buttermilk ice cream caps the meal in a singularly regional style. An extensive wine cellar, numbering some 5,000 bottles, provides ample selection opportunity, along with very good choices by the glass.
