Robata Bar Restaurant Review:

All part of the same family, the Sushi Rokus, BOA Steakhouses and Katana have a little sister on Ocean Avenue, in a smaller, more intimate space designed by Dodd Mitchell. Robata Bar is meant to be a casual and relaxed place to come for happy hour or a light dinner in a lively atmosphere. Lots of action is generated at the bar, which occupies half of the space. The pouring of cocktails, sakés and beers shares the scene with the robata grill (a traditional style of Japanese grilling). No reservations are taken for the tables, which are situated under 5,000 golden tassels hanging from the ceiling; or for the Japanese photograph-adorned booths, or at the 20-foot walnut bar. Patience is rewarded in the form of 20 robata yaki (skewers, ranging from $2.50 to $20), a sashimi plate, a raw bar with items like tuna tartare and popcorn rock shrimp ceviche, a seaweed salad with ginger vinaigrette, or sea bass spring rolls. Desserts come from next-door Sushi Roku; expect a plate of fruits, a chocolate cake or ice cream. Happy hour (daily from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. and Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m.-11 p.m.) offers good deals like $5 Fuji apple martinis, skewers and bites.
