San Rafael native Sol Hernandez offers the food of her Puerto Rican heritage at this popular restaurant. Grab a menu and get in the line that frequently snakes out the door and up the sidewalk. Vibrant colors, tropical flowers and foliage and toe-tapping Latin music set the stage for the addictive dishes that come out of the kitchen. Don't miss crisp shrimp covered in plantain crumbs, or the pollo al horno, marinated chicken with garlicky salad, beans and rice with pimento-stuffed olives and sweet or savory plantains. We also suggest the specials of the day; steaming soups that warm the soul; mofongo (the national dish of the island nation); Sol's Cuban or steak sandwiches; the vegetarian plate; and either the vegan coconut flan with cinnamon or rich cheese-based flan for dessert. Many dishes are made with organic ingredients and are gluten free. Drinks are a highlight, too --- the limeade is legendary and iced tea with orange and mango refreshing.
