Spaggi's Restaurant Review:
Sharing a nondescript shopping center with a Home Depot, Spaggi’s is a pleasant surprise indeed, with its tasteful ambience and sophisticated fare from chef-owner Henry Gonzalez. A pair of intimate olive green dining rooms is the setting for a cuisine that ranges from traditional Italian (e.g. lasagna, fettuccine primavera) to steaks to fresh seafood embellished with French-inspired sauces. We like to start with a three-cheese tomato tart topped with puff pastry, a fine Caesar salad or potatoes stuffed with Asiago cheese. Linguine is tossed in a light pesto sauce with a touch of cream, while a delicate white wine sauce enhances a simple dish of penne with artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes and asparagus. Steaks are cooked at 1,600-degrees, just like at the top steakhouses, and Gonzalez insists on comparable dry-aged USDA Prime beef. A luxe chocolate soufflé is featured for dessert. The wine list offers a wide selection from Piedmont to the Pacific Coast, with some good values sprinkled amongst them. Far from the limelight of the Westside, Gonzalez is another example of a talented young chef toiling out in the ’burbs, well worth discovering.
