This family-owned eatery in the basement of a 1900s era town library on the often neglected streets of downtown Hillsboro offers a stimulating excursion into authentic Japanese dining. Patrons are encouraged to order "Japanese style," as in "order throughout the meal." Solicitous staff makes choosing from the daunting menu easy. For the best experience, sample the sushi and sashimi, including rarely found options such as baby octopus and scallops. Raw fish options are all sustainably sourced, including some unusual fish species, and all are impeccably prepared. Recommended hot dishes include pork stir-fried with ginger and onions, steamed clams in saké, gyoza dumplings, and halibut tempura with a batter as delicate as lace filigree. A few Americanized items, such as asparagus and bacon, are also worth ordering. There's a heady variety of saké to accompany your meal, including tasting flights.
