Tacoteca is the collaboration of restaurateur Adam Fleischman (Umami Burger) and chef Ricardo Diaz (Colonia Taco Lounge). As at Diaz’ other restaurants (which also include Bizarra Capital in Whittier), you’ll find tacos alongside subtly elevated Mexican fare with contemporary touches like a duck confit tamal or crisp pork belly quesadilla. Don’t miss the lamb barbacoa taco, rich meat punctuated with a fresh mint garlic salsa, or the wild scallop carpaccio livened up with black aguachile. Mezcal cocktails are particularly compelling in their originality, complexity and depth. A light touch is found mixing the distinctive smoky liquor with tonic, grapefruit and rosemary; sophistication imbues another drink blending Campari and habanero brine. The “Aguacatero” combines mezcal, avocado, green Chartreuse and lime; it’s garnished with a bamboo skewer of crispy fried chapulines (grasshoppers) --- a great conversation starter. Explore more than 90 mezcals from the list, and there’s an ample Mexican/West Coast beer selection. The loungy vibe is cool, and guest DJs play on weekends.
