Taste of the Himalayas Restaurant Review:

The story goes that 60 or 70 years ago, a famous mountain climber traveled through Sonoma with his trusty Sherpa companion. The mountain climber went on his merry way but the Sherpa was so taken with the community that he decided to stay. Not a confirmed story, but it would explain the existence of this odd, charming little restaurant in the heart of Wine Country. Located up a rather uninviting alleyway behind the local movie theater, the atmosphere is a bit crowded but the Tibetan wall hangings provide the perfect exotic touch. Himalayan food is similar to Indian without the burning-hot spices. A Nepalese appetizer of vegetable or lamb momo is a must-try; a savory steamed dumpling filled with lamb and cabbage or spinach and onions is served with a piquant tomato sauce. Tarkari (curry dishes) are ample enough to share but be sure to try the saag paneer, a minced spinach dish with dried cheese cubes. Tandoori grilled lamb and salmon are also clear favorites. Side dishes include naan bread, a complimentary bowl of lentil soup, and mango chutney. Local Sonoma wines are available, but the Himalayan spiced tea or a beer is probably a better choice.
