You’ll feel like you’re eating at grandma’s at Threadgill’s, one of Austin’s most famous eateries since 1933. This downtown location is filled with Austin music memorabilia and offers a fine Sunday gospel brunch. The massive menu offers just about any Texas comfort food you could dream up without any culinary fusion or confusion to get in the way. Signature dishes include the chicken-fried steak, which is as big as your face, and comes smothered in cream gravy. Don’t miss substantial sides of broccoli and rice casserole, collard greens or stewed okra and tomatoes. Pecan-crusted chicken is rich and moist, while bronzed catfish is crisp and piquant with Cajun spices. Chocolate icebox pie is a homemade finale we just can’t resist. The outdoor beer garden boasts a good sound system that fills the Austin air with many of town’s best-known touring acts.
