Viva Zapata Restaurant Review:

Viva Zapata---named after the early twentieth-century Mexican revolutionary---has been satisfying the cravings of New Haven area co-eds and locals alike for well over three decades. The old Southwest saloon-meets-cantina style setting exudes character; the interior walls are constructed from a 200-year-old barn while brick walls and a peanut shell-riddled floor in the bar area gives the atmosphere a certain endearing, albeit neglected, charm. All the usual casual Mexican fare can be had here, like the combination plate, an enchilada, taco, rice and beans with your choice of filling, or the bistec ranchero, a grilled sirloin steak topped with sautéed onions and peppers and served with rice and broccoli. While the limited wine selection includes the standard Merlot, Cabernet and Chardonnay options, and Mexican and other beers are available, the emphasis is on the tequilas that add a measure of "authenticity" to your "this side of the border" Mexican experience.
