THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Ming's Cafe Restaurant Review:
A real Chinese restaurant located just outside of Chinatown, Mings Café is an offshoot of the huge Mings Market which is about 200 yards from this non-descript (and thats being kind) restaurant. Like many restaurants that cater to Chinese diners, there are two menus, a Chinese-only menu of house specialties and specialty seafood and an English menu. You can ask for specialties from the Chinese one, but the wait staff will often steer Anglos to what they think is safer ground. Still if youre persistent, life beyond lo mein is possible. The Hong Kong style seafood like salt and pepper shrimp and clams in black bean sauce is as good and a lot cheaper than similar dishes at the fancier places in Chinatown. The room looks like a Caféteria but it isnt. If you can show the wait staff youre serious, they will steer you onto some funky ground, like sautéed eels or whole fish in a thin ginger-studded fish stock.
