Windsor's Mirepoix seats two dozen in a cozy house just a hop from the town green. Its dining room foregoes the French fantasy feel, though rouged walls and single chandelier teardrops hanging from recessed lights add charm. The menu includes noble takes on the bistro classics one expects, for instance escargots with bone marrow, caramelized onion tart, bouillabaisse with saffron aïoli and a du-jour special of boeuf bourguignon. Another fine option: the “avec frites” section of the menu, pairing triple-cooked fries with braised sweetbreads, hanger steak, mussels or goose sausage. Leisurely braised coq au vin comes with lentils and spinach---but alas, the bacon goes alarmingly missing. A better bet: pork that falls off the shank by sheer longing with plump, airy fritters studded with corn. Or, go elegant with recomposed butter lettuce salad and pan-fried trout, polenta cake and ginger-fennel nage. Seductive desserts like “saddened” chocolate cake and butterscotch pudding deal a fatal blow. A concise wine list, diversely priced, centers on local bottlings with some choice French options. The neighborly staff understands upscale dining, pacing meals attentively without becoming intrusive.
