Mu Ramen, Long Island City, NY

Mu Ramen Restaurant Review

: Don’t come to this buzzy Long Island City ramen spot for authenticity. Saké in tea cups, starters in miso soup bowls, and ramen in smaller-than-usual bowls: the Japanese, generally fussy about what vessels their food and drinks are served in, would be puzzled. And then there’s the service, which could sometimes use a shot of patience and grace. The long saké and beer list offers something for everyone, while wine is an afterthought. There are about a half dozen ramen options offered, most of which are surprisingly underwhelming. The namesake Mu is forgettable and flavorless. How could bone marrow-spiked ramen be so dull on the palate? Starters are where this spot shines: fried chicken wings stuffed with foie gras, uni paired with salmon roe, and an excellent fried pork chop wading in a shallow pool of broth are taste bud-pleasers. Mu might not be worth the trek to Long Island City (or the long wait times), but for locals, it’s a decent addition to the neighborhood.
