Mums is Sacramento’s only true vegetarian restaurant. Not even a hint of poultry or scent of fish will make itself into this purest of kitchens. Opened in 1983, Mums has won several awards for turning out its tempeh, tofu, German potato balls, eggplant and spanikopita (phyllo pastry with spinach, feta, mushrooms and onions). All soups are made from scratch and are completely vegan. If creamy, they achieve that consistency with potatoes. For lunch, Mums burger is very popular. It’s really a nut loaf, which is essentially a meatloaf sans the meat but baked with various nuts, cheeses, eggs and rice. Brunch on weekends means omelets, scrambled tofu, burritos, potato items and homemade bread and, just like on weekdays, a down-to-earth, comfy mood prevails.
