Muscadine Restaurant Review

: Sitting in Muscadine's unpretentious, inviting dining room makes it easy to imagine warm Southern breezes wafting into what feels like a friend's large kitchen. If it's a balmy day, you may eat in the backyard --- or rather be seated at picnic tables in a courtyard shared by several neighboring restaurants. Chef Laura Rhoman is an eighth-generation Mississippian so she knows what she's doing when it comes to Southern food. Menu choices hit all the favorites, and everything is well-prepared with a welcome light touch. Order the Meat + Three with "Nashville hot" crispy breading (more tangy than blistering hot, really) on either chicken or catfish. Sides include fried okra, greens, sea island red peas and braised summer squash. Flaky biscuits are complemented by homemade jam. Those seeking a slightly smaller meal may want to order the shrimp and grits, the andouille omelet or a cochon pork fritter. If you encounter a line when you arrive at this homey spot, you can relax in the aforementioned courtyard with frequently refilled coffee or a Bloody Mary from the full bar.
