: Chef Josie Le Balch (of the Santa Monica institution Josie) and her husband, Frank Delzio, operate this friendly little sister spot next door. Wine is a particular passion for Delzio, and it shows in both the interesting wine list and also literally on the walls, some of which are covered with corks or displays of bottles. The rest of the space favors cement and glass, so it can get loud when it's busy. Seating choices include high-top and traditional tables, plus two bars. Behind the bar are a few televisions as well as shelves of spices and cookbooks that bring a homey touch. To start, choose from snacks like beer and bacon caramel corn or compose a cheese and charcuterie plate from options like venison salami from Angel's Salumi & Truffles. Le Balch presents a menu of gastropub dishes ranging from soups and sandwiches, such as a crispy Pacific snapper po' boy, to wild game chili and a tarragon-roasted half chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed greens. For dessert, you may find a chocolate brownie torte or apple-walnut crisp. Around two dozen wines are available by the half glass (3 oz.), glass and bottle. Rounding things out are California draft beers and classic cocktails with a twist. Beware that the casual dining setting belies the high price tag when the check is all added up. Nevertheless, this is a popular place so be prepared for a bit of a wait as reservations are not accepted.
