Ambitiously reaching for a crowd seeking Asian food with American overtones, this Washingtonian Center place has a tropical feel minus the heat and mosquitoes. It also features a banker-turned-chef who has structured a menu that pulls from Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese cuisines, plus a few Hawaiian-inspired dishes. After all, the name “ono” means “delicious” in the Hawaiian dialect. You’ll find plenty to tempt your appetite, from spring rolls, angel wings (a Thai appetizer), and some tasty steamed Thai dumplings with a sweet soy sauce to a minimalist Thai salad (not much here despite the description that there’s chicken and beef), a Cantonese-Thai dish of stir-fried beef and broccoli rice noodles (not enough flavor) and assorted meat and seafood entrées. You’ll even be able to pick out a Japanese bento box meal, based on chicken or assorted seafood offerings. Perhaps the highlight of this Asian portrait is the fried roti dough stuffed with puréed taro root---unusual and a treat.
