Ozumo Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant: Large wood doors open into a well-manicured, dark and masculine saké bar. Beyond an open kitchen, a brighter and softer raised dining room boasts beautiful handmade lampshades, textured wallpaper and modern furniture. It's a truly serene and beautiful setting that allows the breathtaking views of the Bay Bridge to take center stage. Although the extensive Japanese menu is notable, the high-end prices better reflect the glorious setting rather than the glorious omakase, or chef's tasting menu.

Food & Drinks: Nicely cut sushi rests on a blessedly restrained pillow of rice. Sushi rolls, named for local geographic areas, are timidly flavored and seem geared for mass appeal. The dishes that integrate French influence or technique, such as the Niman Ranch filet in a Cabernet reduction sauce or the black cod with a white miso and saké lees marinade, feature more dynamic flavors, and are elegantly prepared. The distinct small plates from the robata grill are also savory, and are appropriate for sharing. Salads sparkle with a drizzling of ponzu dressing. There is an extensive menu of premium sakés; the flights are an excellent way to sample and learn. If the disorganized and poorly timed service improves, Ozumo will be an excellent choice for an expense account meal.
