The Back Bay flagship of this local Italian chain is also the most chic, bringing in shoppers and business-folk by day and couples by night, rather than harried suburban families. Elegant salads and designer pizzas put the Cal before the Ital, while an extensive selection of cream- and butter-laden pastas and the usual veal chops and chicken cutlets put the true-blue American after it. Still, it could be much worse than pedestrian; reliability and friendliness have kept this franchise afloat.
