Charlotte Street is lined on both sides with restaurants. Most are less than inspiring, but Passione is one of the exceptions. Amalfi-born Gennaro Contaldo is passionate about his native cuisine, and sources the best ingredients to cook with skill. The fact that TV chef Jamie Oliver cooked here has little to do with Contaldo’s fame, which comes from years of producing the kind of daily changing dishes that satisfy. Try a starter of smoked eel with red onions in balsamic and winter salad, then if it’s your first time, go for the Amalfi dish of tagliatelle con vongole (clams). Sea bass, veal cutlet, slow-cooked rabbit and many more mains show what can be done with a simple, completely honest approach. Desserts come with the same praise and the wine list has some interesting regional selections.
