Chef Patrick Rand is easy to spot in the bustling open kitchen of this quaint wine country bistro. He's also known to slip into the dining room to chat and share a glass with guests. We like his emphasis on local wines, which often dictate the menu itself. A Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir, for example, stars in a peppercorn demi-glace that's doused over a 14-ounce pan-broiled rib-eye. And local port and Cabernet support a sauce poured over a grilled poblano chili stuffed with shrimp and crab. The best-selling salad features a large heart of Romaine that is briefly sautéed and served with a thick cream of balsamic vinegar, brown sugar and Gorgonzola. Paella is popular, with a bounty of Santa Barbara spotted prawns, blue mussels, andouille sausage and chicken. When we go wine-tasting, we like to make a mid-afternoon stop here for the Winemaker's Lunch, featuring homemade pâté, a daily choice of cheeses, port-soaked figs, glazed pecans and fresh bread. On a sunny afternoon, we highly recommend sitting on the veranda, which provides a prime view of the lazy foot traffic in this Old Western town.
