Penang Restaurant Review:

The décor suggests a countryside Malaysian home, and a religious icon peers down from a roofline perch as if to bless the assembly during dinner. Graze on appetizers, such as minced shrimp wrapped in bacon and fried, and the beef or chicken satay. The pickled vegetable appetizer called achat is a mélange of crunchy, slightly hot peppers and other vegetables that delight every part of the palate. The menu says “sprinkled with peanut topping,” but our dish came with sesame seeds. We’d eat it either way. Expect large main courses, such as the pork leg with mushrooms ringed with crisply cooked bright green broccoli. We suggest house specials such as ayam rendang, a dish of chicken cooked with lemon grass, mild chili paste and coconut milk curry. Desserts make no bend toward the West, except for ice creams. The beer list is short but offers some of the regional specialties, such as Singha from Thailand, and is far preferable to the wine list. Also located at 4897 Buford Hwy., Chamblee, 770-220-0308.
