This Petrossian Restaurant & Boutique is tucked away within the Tiffany & Co. store in the luxurious South Coast Plaza shopping mall, the largest on the West Coast with the most concentration of design fashion retail in the U.S.

The same as you don’t buy diamonds at Tiffany every day, you don’t eat caviar on a daily basis, so you might as well do it in grand style. The elegance of the lieu cannot be disputed: the décor is in pure Tiffany fashion with beautiful Brazilian turquoise marble on the walls. If you take a look at the door to the kitchen, you will understand how much care has been put into the design. It could not detract from Tiffany’s sophistication. And after all, we are also talking about the best caviar brand, which has a history dating back to 1920, when brothers Melkoum and Mouchegh Petrossian first brought their caviar to Paris.

The menu

From the eight savory items on the short menu, only two don’t have caviar but rather Petrossian smoked salmon: the Speckled Lettuce Salad and the Hand Sliced Smoked Salmon. For caviar bliss, start with the Tsar Imperial Caviar Tasting showcasing four varieties of the très luxury black pearls. The classic Egg Royale is, of course, present next to the elevated Beef Tartare covered by caviar and a gold leaf. The Potato Mille-Feuille is a must-have — when I heard how it is prepared, I admired the patience of the chef. While the Oysters + Caviar served with an apple mignonette are less complicated to prepare, they are very flavorful and served in a dish that could well come from Tiffany. You are not permitted to leave without having the Soufflé, made with dark chocolate accompanied by his sister Crème Anglaise.

I should have tried the Tiffany Caviartini, a vodka cocktail with caviar and crème fraîche olive, but I was driving. There are white, rosé and red wines, though I think caviar calls for Champagne; options are between Ruinart, Dom Pérignon, Krug and Veuve Clicquot.

Sophie‘s tip: Don’t leave without a box of sturgeon eggs. You can then walk around the mall with your Petrossian bag, and surprise a loved one or friends at home.
