The Morales family has fueled St. Louisans’ love of enchiladas and tamales since 1983, and they are masters of the fine line between Tex-Mex and true Mex. For the latter, look for items like cactus salad, pozole, chilaquiles, ocean perch ceviche or birria, a spicy goats’ meat stew. On the Tex-Mex side, there’s familiar guacamole, mole, empanadas and burritos. Shrimp gets an entire menu section all to itself, in winning combinations like chipotles or tomatillo sauce or butter and mole sauce. Desserts go beyond the expected Tex-Mex, particularly the cheese flan and fruit empanadas. Restaurant business booms at lunchtime, while later in the day attention turns to the well-stocked bar.
