Piazza Pellegrini Restaurant Review:
Situated off the beaten path of Spaghetti Row, Piazza Pellegrini utilizes fresh, high quality ingredients to prepare classic Italian dishes that are a step above most of the Italian fare in the area. Don’t miss pappardelle Pellegrini, wide ribbons of handmade beet or spinach pasta tossed in a ragù of short-ribs, braised three to four hours. The flavorful timballo di verdura features layers of grilled eggplant, red onions, zucchini, tomatoes and fresh mozzarella with pesto sauce. Light, homemade ricotta gnocchi arrive with prosciutto, peas and asparagus in a decadent Gorgonzola cream sauce; and galletto al mattone is a fun take on the famous “chicken grilled under a brick,” done instead with Cornish game hen marinated with lemon and rosemary. Cappellini con pomodoro is simple and satisfying with angel hair pasta, tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and bright green basil. The lunch menu offers burgers of house-ground beef on fresh ciabatta bread, as well as pizzas and salads. The room is homey, with earth-tone walls and sconces that cast a soft glow. The wine list is a mix of California and Italian varietals; however, there are only eight by the glass. Considering the neighborly, inviting feel of the place, we’d like to see a few more.
